Savonnieres

Savonnieres, picturesque village on the bank of the Cher river a few kilometres south-west of Tours in the department of Indre et Loire, is famous for its caverns.

Natural and manmade caves (some of them providing the stone for the chateau of Villandry), all are permanently dripping with calcium-filled water that rapidly petrifies anything left in its way. Stalactites and stalagmites sparkle beneath the electric light, as do the variety of objects that have been left in the various natural basins for the magical effects of the caves to transform slowly into rock.
